Make usable roof space count

Getting more from the roof you have.

Roof area is the limit on many Surrey homes, whether it is a hipped slope broken up by dormers or a street-facing elevation you would rather not fill. Panels with a higher rating give more output per square metre, so fewer of them can still reach the same total.

All-black panels, with dark cells, frames and backing, sit more quietly on a dark roof. Your options state the rating of each panel and the total kWp, so the extra output and any extra cost are plain to see.

The finish

A clean installation is part of the specification.

Cable routes

Planned at the survey so cabling is concealed or neatly clipped, never left to improvisation.

Equipment position

Inverter and battery are sited where they are least intrusive and still close to the consumer unit.

Symmetry

Rows are laid out square to the roof and clear of vents, rooflights and edges.

Mounting

Rails and fixings are matched to the tile or slate and kept watertight.

Trees and shade

Mature trees and your layout.

Surrey has a great deal of tree cover, particularly around the Hills and the wooded commuter towns. We model shade through the year at the survey, which can point to a different roof face, a smaller array or equipment that copes better with partial shade.

Microinverters or optimisers let each panel work on its own, so a shaded corner does not drag down the rest. A hybrid inverter is the usual choice where a battery is planned, now or later.

Roof or ground

When the roof is not the answer.

Most homes in the commuter towns use the roof, where plots are smaller and it is the obvious place. Out towards the Surrey Hills and the county edges, a larger garden can make a ground-mounted array worth considering, particularly when trees shade the roof itself.

Which is practical depends on the plot and on planning rules in protected areas, and the survey settles it.

Real Surrey installs

How the numbers vary.

One of our Surrey examples, in Epsom, has 12 panels with a 3.3kWh battery. Another, in Addlestone, has 26 panels. A third, in Woking, pairs 10 panels with a 10kWh battery and an EV charger. Each was specified for the household in it.

Payment options

Keep the specification. Change the payment route.

A system chosen on quality should not be traded down because the payment is monthly. We price the same proposal across outright purchase, monthly payments, selected 0% offers and qualifying routes with nothing upfront.

VAT on solar and battery work is currently set at zero, with the relief ending on 31 March 2027. Stretching repayments over a longer term can reduce the monthly figure but increases the total cost of credit.

Check current local availability.

Several homes in one area being fitted close together can sometimes bring a discount for the area. Your postcode shows whether one is available.

Finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. The installation team behind Surrey Solar acts as a credit broker, not a lender. Asking about payment options is not a finance application and will not touch your credit file.

Before you decide

What your Surrey options should spell out.

Every figure rests on an assumption, and you should be able to inspect each one. A good set of options names:

Panels

Make, rating, count and kWp, with the reason each was chosen.

Layout

Where the array sits, how it is aligned and how the cables run.

Yearly output

Expected generation across a year, with the shade allowed for.

Your share

How much the household is likely to use, and what is assumed for export.

Cover

Warranties, and how performance figures are validated.

Price

The project cost, with each payment route set out separately.

The installation team behind Surrey Solar is MCS certified and TrustMark registered, and EPVS validation is used where it applies.

Common questions

What Surrey homeowners ask about panels.

How are panels arranged around dormers and vents?

Rows are kept square to the roof and clear of dormers, vents, rooflights and edges, so the array looks planned. Where obstacles break the slope into small areas, the layout is adjusted or a smaller array is proposed.

What happens if a tree shades part of the roof?

We model the shade through the year. Depending on the result we might choose another roof face, a smaller array or equipment that lets each panel work independently, rather than ruling solar out.

How long does fitting take?

Most houses take a day or two, more for large arrays or difficult access. Expect scaffolding first, then a handover where the installer explains how everything works.

Will the roof need planning permission?

Typically no. Ordinary Surrey houses are permitted development, while listed buildings, some conservation areas and properties within the Surrey Hills National Landscape are where permission may come into play. Our Why Surrey page covers each.

What does upkeep involve?

Almost nothing, as nothing moves. An occasional glance for moss, debris or fresh shade from growing trees is plenty. Makers usually give a 25-year-plus performance guarantee, a shorter product warranty is standard, and our workmanship cover sits beside both.
