Battery Storage

Battery storage

Battery storage for using more solar after you get home.

While you are out, the panels keep producing, and a battery stores the surplus to use once you are back. Solar and battery work currently attracts no VAT, a relief set to finish on 31 March 2027.

Costs nothing to ask and nothing to sign. Finance for qualifying homes.

Why it suits Surrey

Built for a commuter household.

Plenty of Surrey households leave early and return in the evening, whether they commute into London or to an office nearby. The panels do most of their work in between. Without storage, that surplus goes to the grid at a low export rate, and the same units are bought back at full price later.

A battery turns the daytime surplus into evening supply, and on a time-of-use tariff it can also fill up overnight at the cheap rate.

Sizing your battery

Capacity follows the routine.

Three Surrey homes with batteries show how much it varies: 3.3kWh in Epsom, 10kWh in Woking and 11.52kWh in Farnham. Each reflects when that household uses power, not how big the array is.

3.3kWhEpsom, with 12 solar panels
10kWhWoking, with 10 panels and an EV charger
11.52kWhFarnham, with 11 solar panels

A household home from late afternoon draws more in the evening than one with someone in all day, so we start from your timetable and not a stock size.

Sizing it correctly

How the right size is worked out.

01

Your timetable

When the house is occupied and when appliances run, not just how much power is used.

02

Panel output

What the array makes on an average day sets a ceiling on what is worth storing.

03

Tariff

Export and time-of-use rates change which size pays back soonest.

04

Specification

A battery matched to the home, placed where it is least intrusive.

Backup and equipment

Where it goes, and what happens in an outage.

Garages and utility rooms are the usual homes, with a sheltered outside wall as the alternative, always close to the consumer unit and inverter. The position is agreed at the survey so it sits tidily. Brands we fit include Duracell, Fox ESS and Growatt.

Most batteries stay off when the grid fails, as panels do alone. Backup needs the system configured for it, so say so early if it matters and the options will list what is included.

Payment options

Same battery, different ways to pay.

Once the specification is settled, we show it across outright purchase and the finance routes available, including qualifying options with nothing upfront and selected 0% offers. A battery can share the finance of a new solar system, or be priced alone when it is going onto panels you already own.

Finance is subject to status, affordability and lender approval. The installation team behind Surrey Solar acts as a credit broker, not a lender. Asking about payment options is not a finance application and will not touch your credit file.

Common questions

What homeowners ask about batteries.

What does a battery do while the family is at work?

The panels generate through the day, and the battery fills from them instead of letting that power leave for the grid. When the household is back, it supplies the evening load. Sizing begins with your timetable.

Can I add a battery to panels I already have?

Usually. Depending on your current inverter, a battery is connected directly, or an AC-coupled model is fitted beside an older string inverter. Compatibility is checked first.

Is a battery worth it with a small array?

It can be, though the surplus to store is smaller. We compare the extra self-use against the cost for your array before suggesting one.

Where does it go?

Usually a garage, utility room or outside wall near the consumer unit. Some units are rated for outdoors. The spot is agreed at the survey.

Most of our installations need the homeowner's consent. If you're renting, feel free to share this with your landlord as we're happy to talk to them directly about fitting a system here.

Almost done. Where should we send your system options?

Please fill in your details and confirm both boxes to continue.

Free, with no obligation. Asking about payment options is not a finance application and will not touch your credit file.

There is no cost and no commitment in sending this. Expect a question or two about how the household uses power before a battery is sized.
